Sporting Assets supported Cycle Pathway CIC’s journey from delivering community cycling programmes to having the widely acclaimed Leeds Urban Bike Park, a national standard cycling facility in South Leeds.

Cycle Pathway CIC had been delivering cycling programmes for Leeds City Council when they were offered an opportunity to convert a former golf course into a bike park offering mountain bike trials, pump tracks and play tracks.

Our support included:

  • Detailed needs and customer analysis
  • Business planning and financial modelling
  • A Sporting Capital loan of £100,000, which helped secure a range of other funders

The business model is based upon free to access trails and tracks; subsidised by the provision of cycling participation programmes, a café, shop and bike maintenance service.

It has been open since 2018. In its first year it saw over 300,000 rides, establishing itself as valued community asset for its inner city catchment, as well as attracting cyclists from further afield. It can be viewed as a prime example of what an inner city bike park can deliver, both in terms of a multi-disciplinary cycling offer and engaging a range of users, in particular young people.

Sporting Assets is now working with Cycle Pathway CIC on the development of another redundant golf course in South Leeds into a dedicated site for their community and education programmes, creating capacity for their ongoing growth and impact.
