Sporting Capital was created in 2017 to demonstrate that there was a market for patient, flexible, repayable capital in the sport and physical activity sector, an industry that had to date been underserved by both the traditional and the social investment markets.
Sporting Capital Fund 1 was the UK’s (and possibly the world’s) first enterprise investment fund designed solely for the sport and physical activity sector. It aimed to use simple, repayable finance as a tool to drive increased resilience, sustainability, and impact. Sporting Assets developed the concept, taking it from a vision through development to management.
The £3m fund was designed and delivered by Sporting Assets and financed through the Growth Fund, a £50m partnership between The National Lottery Community Fund and Big Society Capital, delivered by Access through a range of social investors.
Launched in 2017, Sporting Capital Fund 1 successfully completed its investment phase in June 2022. It invested in a broad range of organisations across England that used sport and physical activity to deliver impact and drive financial sustainability and resilience.Find out more
Club Capital is the first social impact investment fund dedicated to a single sport, gymnastics. Sporting Assets developed and now manage the fund in a unique partnership with British Gymnastics.
Launched in 2020, it is a £10m fund which supports gymnastics facility and equipment projects over a five-year period, helping to address facility development barriers for recreational gymnastics. It is funded by British Gymnastics, Sport England, Big Society Capital, and the Bank Workers Charity.
Club Capital offers unsecured loans between £25,000 and £250,000 (up to £750,000 in exceptional circumstances) to enable clubs to move into new, or expand or safeguard existing, dedicated gymnastics facilities.Find out moreVisit website
Beyond these managed funds, Sporting Assets designed and supported the delivery of the Governments’ targeted response to the pandemic for spectator sport, the £600m Sport Survival Package and its precursor The Rugby League Sport Survival Fund.
With Sport England as Programme Manager the Sport Survival Package invested a total of £264 million to spectator reliant sports organisations over 18 months, supporting over 1,500 sport organisations across 15 sports.
We are currently developing further impact investment funds for the sector to be launched later in 2023.
The social investment from Sporting Capital has been an invaluable resource, enabling us to respond quickly and flexibly to our rapidly changing environment and supporting the needs of the communities we seek to serve.
Founder and CEO, Boxing Futures
The team took time to understand our vision and believed in our ability to deliver on it. They introduced us to Sport England adding significant capital and revenue grants. This sort of partnership working was outside of our realm of imagination and completely unlocked our start up journey.
Founder and CEO, Indi Rock
The Sporting Capital loan gave us breathing space to get the business model up and running and start to generate revenues to support a fantastic community facility into the future.
Cycle Pathway CIC Director
This investment is the first time we have taken on repayable finance. We want to take our award-winning pioneering organisation to more leisure centres, making it mainstream and available for all who need it. The loan will be key to giving us the required staff and cashflow to grow over the next five years to achieve this.
Operations Manager, Sport for Confidence
The investment from Sporting Capital has been invaluable, without the loan we would not have been able to start this project. The loan is flexible and really helped us to have the confidence to move forward with such a big project.

Cost of Living Small Grants Programme
Sporting Assets, with support from Access the Foundation for Social Investment, are delivering a small grants fund this Winter to help organisations delivering services that support their community with the rising cost of living.
This small fund is enabling organisations working in the most deprived areas of England to develop new projects that increase the revenue they generate whilst also supporting their cost of living activities such as food services, warm spaces and providing financial advice.
